This article contains the following sections:
Direct Conversations
To start a new conversation, head to the profile of the user you wish to message and select 'Start Conversation'. This will direct you to the Conversations page and automatically open a conversation with the user.
(Note that the user in question will need to be a part of a group with the 'Access Conversations' ability.)
You also have the option to start a conversation from the 'Create' tab in the top navigation bar. This will direct you to the Conversations page where you will be able to start a new conversation using the green button in the top left-hand corner. Search for the user you would like to message and add them to the conversation.
Members will be invited to the conversation when you send your first message.
The conversation will only start once they've accepted this invitation. This means that users are protected and can decline conversations if they wish.
To keep the conversation going, you can head back to the user's profile page where you will find the option to 'Resume Conversation', or you can click the 'My Conversations' link under your profile picture.
If you wish to edit a message after sending, you can hover over the message and click the pencil icon:
To delete a previously sent message, you can hover over the message and click the delete icon:
Group Conversations
We enable you to create group conversations of up to 5 people (4 + yourself). To do this, head to the Conversations page and start a new conversation by searching for the users and adding them as participants.
The users will be invited to the conversation when you send your first message. As with 1:1 conversations, they will only be added to the conversation once they've accepted this invitation. This means that users are protected and can decline conversations if they wish.
Notifications
To ensure that you receive notifications for new conversation messages, head to the conversations page and click the cog in the top left-hand corner, where you will be able to configure your notification settings.
Every 15 minutes we check for any unread notifications from the previous 15 minutes. We create 1 email and send all of them in a digest.
(Note that in order to receive emails about unread messages, you will need to ensure that you have enabled the relevant setting in your notification preferences. This can be found at 'Account Settings' > 'Notification Preferences'.)
You will also receive in-app notifications under the Conversations icon in the top navigation bar:
From here, you can opt to mark all conversations as read or refresh to check for any new conversation notifications. You can also mark a conversation as unread, by hovering over the conversation in question.
If you no longer wish to receive notifications for a 1:1 or group conversation, you can hover over the conversation in the sidebar or click the bell icon in the top right-hand corner to mute the conversation.
Muted conversations will appear in a separate tab in the sidebar, below all un-muted conversations. You can un-mute a conversation at any time.
